If you’ve been a marijuana user for a long time, you’re probably looking for new ways to consume the cannabis plant, especially if you’ve gotten bored of lighting up a joint or a spliff every time you’re in need of a psychoactive high. Or maybe you’re a medical marijuana user who wants to try new methods of getting your daily dose of cannabis besides using rolling papers.

No matter what the case may be, you’ll definitely benefit from reading about different methods of inhaling cannabis. While we’ve previously covered whether you can smoke weed with regular paper, in this article we’ll go over all the different smoking methods as well as what household items you can use to make DIY weed smoking devices.

Blunts and Joints

Blunts and joints allude to the original method of consuming cannabis – smoking it. Joints are enjoyed by lighting up cannabis that’s been ground and rolled into rolling paper. Apart from cannabis, some people decide to put a bit of tobacco in their joint, which makes it a spliff. And some even add concentrate, kief, or even moon rocks to their joints in order to increase the potency, and with that, their high.

On the other hand, blunts differ from joints because of the paper that’s used to roll the cannabis in. While joints are rolled in rolling paper, blunts are made with cigar paper which makes them burn slower. No matter which one you prefer, they both provide a unique smoking experience.

Vaporizer

Vaporizers, or vape pens as they’re usually called, are marketed as the healthiest way to get high since marijuana vapor has fewer toxins and carcinogens than marijuana smoke. Vapes are an alternative to smoking a joint or a blunt because by vaporizing cannabis, the cannabinoids are transformed into gas at a lower temperature.

After you light up, THC, CBD, and all the other cannabinoids are vaporized at a temperature of around 140–205°C (285–400°F). The main parts of a vape pen are the mouthpiece, the THC cartridge which contains the cannabis concentrate, and the battery. The cartridge can contain different kinds of concentrates like oils and distillates to suit the taste of the person vaping.

Bongs

Bongs are another preferred way of consuming the cannabis plant. Smoking weed out of a bong can make you higher faster because you inhale larger quantities of marijuana smoke by using it. To light a bong, you only need the device which should be filled with water and your favorite cannabis strain. Bongs can be made out of different materials including plastic, glass, ceramic, bamboo, or metal, and they have various designs like carburetor bongs, gravity bongs, percolator bongs, straight-tube bongs, and others.

Pipes

Pipes are typically used to smoke tobacco or cannabis. They come in all shapes and sizes like classic pipes, steamroller pipes, or one-hitter pipes, and can be made from metal, wood, glass, or clay. Pipes have a mouthpiece at one end, and a place to put and light up cannabis at the other. Once you light your pipe up, make sure you cover the carb hole on the side when inhaling, and release it when exhaling. They’re very easy to use and are a preferred method for smoking cannabis for a lot of cannabis users.

Bubblers

Bubblers are a great transition between a glass pipe and a bong. They’re small enough to rival a pipe, while also producing an intensive high like the one you get from a bong. Bubblers have a chamber filled with water and a bowl that gets filled with weed. If you’re a cannabis user looking to try a new method of consuming weed, bubblers may be an interesting and portable option to get high.

Dab Rigs

Dab rigs use the method of flash evaporation to produce vapor that is inhaled by the user (which makes the cannabis smoke less harsh compared to smoking weed in a joint). Dabs are very potent extracts from the cannabis plant, and as a result of that, they aren’t recommended for beginners. Cannabis extracts like weed wax are placed on the dab rig and lit up with a blowtorch. Since extracts and concentrates are more potent than the regular flower, this method will get you higher than any other method.

Alternative Things To Smoke Out Of

A lot of cannabis users have found themselves without rolling papers or their favorite bong, therefore needing to make do with what’s around to smoke weed. Hence, DIY weed smoking devices and using household objects to smoke out of has become quite widespread in recent years. But let’s see what are the most popular things you can smoke out of when you run out of rolling paper.

Gravity Bongs or Water Bottle Bongs

Gravity bongs, also known as water bongs, are one of the most commonly used homemade weed smoking devices, and to make them you only need a few items. These include a water bottle (2-liter bottle) with the bottom of the bottle removed to hold the smoke, and a container or a mason jar to hold the water, along with aluminum foil. The weed should be packed in the foil (the foil has poked holes to enable good airflow) and placed on top of the cut plastic bottle that should fit inside the glass container filled with water. What’s left to do is to light it up and enjoy. Gravity bongs can be made out of watermelons, pumpkins, and even milk jugs.

Apple Pipes

An apple pipe is another popular DIY smoking device on rare occasions when you don’t have your bong or pipe nearby. To transform your apple into a smoking device, you need to poke holes into it. Poke two separate holes (one at the top and one on the side) which connect to provide unrestricted airflow, and place the weed in aluminum foil and on top of the hole. You could also poke another hole on the side of the apple to serve as a carburetor or a carb, light up, and enjoy your high.

Soda Can Pipes

A soda can pipe is another preferred “do-it-yourself” method of consuming cannabis. Soda cans can be converted to smoking devices by bending the can in half, poking holes in the crease, as well as making a carb hole on the side. The weed should be placed inside the crease, and when lighting it up, the user should inhale through the mouthpiece.

Hot Knives

This method might be a bit more dangerous than the previous one, which is why it’s best to do it while sober (also while being very careful because you could burn yourself from the handles). For this method, you’ll need two knives and a heating source like a stovetop. The knives should be placed on the stove and heated on medium heat. Once the knives are sufficiently heated, the cannabis buds are placed on one knife and squeezed with the other. As the weed gets heated up, it starts to smoke, and the smoke is inhaled by the user.

TeePee Steamroller

A stoner in need will find a way to transform even the most improbable household items like toilet paper rolls into DIY smoking devices without much hassle. To make your toilet paper steamroller, you’re going to poke a small hole into one side of the paper where you can place aluminum foil and weed on top. The carburetor should be placed on the other side, and all that’s left to do is to light up and enjoy.

Final Words on Weed Smoking Devices

We hope that you obtained new information about all the different ways you can smoke the cannabis plant, including common smoking devices as well as DIY ones. Now you know that you can take the most simple household items and turn them into powerful weed smoking devices. Good luck with your DIY project(s)!
