Getting home from the dispensary and realizing that you’ve only bought cannabis nugs and no rolling papers is the definition of a conundrum. Now you have to figure out how to smoke weed with a DIY smoking device made from household items – but believe us when we say that it can be an easy task.

In this article, we’ll focus on providing you with ways to smoke your ganja (which don’t involve using regular paper). By looking through some of the cannabis smoking devices you can make on your own, you can save yourself from taking another trip to the dispensary, so read on.

Types of Cannabis Products

Before we get into the different smoking devices, let’s go over the types of cannabis products you can find on the market.

Flower

The cannabis flower, bud, or nug, is the smokable part of the cannabis plant. It’s cultivated, harvested, dried, cured, and ready to smoke once you buy it from a dispensary and roll it into a joint, place it in a bong, or make a spliff out of it.

Concentrates

Concentrates are made by extracting the potent cannabinoids and terpenes from the buds with different kinds of solvents. Compared to the raw flower, they’re much more potent.

Edibles

Edibles come in all shapes and sizes ranging from baked goods to drinks which are made with either the cannabis flower or cannabis concentrates. You can make weed brownies with cannabutter, use cannabis oil to make a pasta sauce, or even use weed trim to make your own homemade cannabis butter from trimmed cannabis leaves.

Tinctures

Tinctures are solutions made by placing cannabis in alcohol and extracting THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids that way. It’s generally used sublingually.

Topicals

Topicals are cannabis products that are applied locally to provide pain relief to a specific area of the body. They can be made into lotions, sprays, balms, creams, and others.

Methods of Consuming Marijuana

Depending on your preferred type of consumption methods, cannabis can be consumed by inhaling it, ingesting it, or applying it topically. Below are some of the most common ways to smoke weed.

Blunts and Joints

Smoking blunts and joints is considered the OG method of consuming marijuana. Joints are rolled into rolling paper while blunts are rolled in tobacco paper, and both provide an enjoyable smoking experience (especially for people used to smoking cigarettes).

Vaporizers

Vaporizers are thought to be the healthiest way one can consume marijuana on account of the lower temperature at which cannabis is heated during the vaporization process. Vape pens consist of a mouthpiece, a rechargeable battery, and a THC cartridge with the prefered cannabis concentrate or extract that suits the needs of the person vaping.

Bongs

A bong is a filtration device, usually made of glass, that’s used to smoke weed. Smoking weed from a bong can be a whole other experience for marijuana aficionados since bongs can come in different shapes and sizes.

Some popular variations include:

  • Straight-tube bongs;
  • Carburetor bongs;
  • Percolator bongs;
  • Gravity bongs.

Pipes

Pipes are another popular cannabis consumption device. They have a mouthpiece at one end and a place where cannabis is placed and lit up on the other, and possibly a carb to the side.

Pipes can be made from wood, metal, glass, or clay and come in variations like:

  • Classic pipes;
  • Steamroller pipes;
  • One-hitter pipes.

Bubblers

Bubblers are in between a glass pipe and a bong, so if you’re a cannabis user who’s bored from using the same old cannabis consumption devices, bubblers may be the smoking device for you.

Dab Rigs

Dabbing involves heating up cannabis concentrates and inhaling the vapor. Dabs are more potent and high-quality compared to the cannabis flower, so they produce a more intense high.

Alternative Options for Smoking Weed

If you’re out of joint papers or blunt wraps, you must get creative in order to smoke marijuana. While some users try to smoke weed with regular paper (which can be harmful to the lungs) or even gum wrappers, there are better ways to consume marijuana.

Corn Husks

Corn husks are a natural sun-dried product that you can use instead of rolling papers to make your joint. And how cool would your joint look wrapped around in what would have otherwise been discarded as composts.

Gravity Bongs

Gravity bongs are a popular smoking device that you can make at home with just a few simple items. You’ll need:

  • A water bottle (a 2-liter bottle with the bottom of the bottle removed)
  • A mason jar or any similar container (to hold the water)
  • Aluminum foil (tinfoil with poked holes that enables good airflow).

The weed is inserted into the foil, placed on top of the plastic bottle that has the glass container filled with water under it, and it’s ready to light up. You can also poke a hole on the side of the bottle to serve as a carburetor.

Apple Pipes

Making a DIY smoking device like an apple pipe is not only a way to use up leftover apples, but it will also give your weed more terpene flavor once you smoke it. To transform your apple into an apple pipe, you’ll need to poke three holes that provide unrestricted airflow. Then, place aluminum foil with little holes inside on top of which you put your cannabis nugs. That’s it – just light up and relax.

Soda Can Pipes

A used-up soda can can also be converted into a weed smoking device. All you need to do is bend it in half, poke holes along the crease, and make a carb hole on the side. Place the weed inside the crease, light it, and start inhaling through the mouthpiece.

Hot Knives

This method involves placing two knives on a stovetop to warm up. Once they’re sufficiently warm, place your dried and cured cannabis buds in between the hot knives and squeeze the buds. As the weed heats through, it starts to release smoke, and that’s when you should start inhaling.

Final Words on Homemade Weed Smoking Devices

No matter which one of the above smoking devices you decide to go for, you certainly won’t make a mistake. Being without a smoking paper or your favorite percolator bong on your hands shouldn’t result in a night where you don’t get your recommended dose of medical marijuana. So, look around your house, and check if you have some of these household items so you don’t have to run to your local dispensary once more.
